10 Books that a Movie Should be Made About

On December 6, 2011, in cable tv, by admin

Some of the best movies started out as a great novel. There are countless books that have yet to be turned into movies. Listed below is ten books that a movie should be made about.
  1. The Shack. Written by William P. Young, The Shack is fictional, but has a personal writing style that draws you in and makes you believe that this truly is the retelling of the main characters distraught in losing his daughter in a kidnapping. A theatrical version of this novel would be something magical to see with the in-depth descriptions that are given of his encounters with the Trinity that take place at the shack and his attempts at coming to terms with his daughter’s death and forgiveness with the killer.
  2. The Catcher in the Rye. While still alive J.D Salinger refused to have his work portrayed in film, but left the rights of this book to his estate when he died in 2010. The book has encountered some controversy over its profanity and teenage sexuality, but it is most known for capturing teenage confusion, alienation and rebellion. The main character Holden Caufield runs away from home after getting into a fight at school and dreams of becoming a ‘catcher in the rye’ which he interprets as saving young children from losing their innocence.
  3. As I Lay Dying. William Faulkner wrote this highly acclaimed novel in just six weeks. Known for its stream of consciousness writing technique with fifteen different narrators this book would definitely be an interesting watch if turned into a movie. As I Lay Dying is about the death of Addie Bundren and her family’s pursuit to honor her wishes of burial.
  4. The Giver. Written by Lois Lowry, The Giver is set in a futuristic society where the main character Jonas is given quite a responsibility for his young age of twelve. He will be the keeper of the memories, to store if needed prior to being removed from everyone else’s mind. The society believes that they can eliminate pain and strife by removing emotions and creating “sameness”.
  5. Artemis Fowl. This set of novels written by Eoin Colfer would make a great movie and sequels to follow. Fantasy novels featuring a teenage criminal mastermind as the title character, Artemis Fowl has intrigued many. The first book of the series follows the main character as he kidnaps a fairy elf in order to obtain a ransom from the fairies hiding underground from humans.
  6. Hush, Hush. Written by Becca Fitzgerald, Hush, Hush was written as a young adult novel that could be turned into a film for all ages. The main character Nora finds herself in danger when a fallen angel comes to earth to kill her. The story takes an interesting twist when the fallen angel falls in love with his prey.
  7. Things Not Seen. This science fiction book written by Andrew Clements would make a wonderful family movie with a few changes. Based on a teenage boy who suddenly turns invisible this book was written for an older audience based on the nudity which could easily be changed in the script. Being invisible may seem like a great superpower, but it also has its setbacks. This could be a great conversation starter with your children on morals.
  8. Duma Key. Many of Stephen King’s books have been turned into movies, but this psychological horror would definitely keep viewers on the edge of their seats if turned into a movie. The book is based on a man named Edgar Freemantle who, after suffering a traumatic accident, moves from Minnesota to Florida for a year to recuperate. While there he takes up painting only to discover his paintings have physic images that not only predict the future, but Edgar is able to manipulate the future based on what he paints.
  9. The Host. Known for her Twilight series, Stephenie Meyer wrote The Host, which can be classified as science fiction/romance. The book is about an alien race that is taking over earth by inhabiting the souls of the human race and thus taking over their minds and bodies. When captured the main character Mel refuses to turn over her mind and fills the aliens with images and memories of her love interest. Instead of trying to find the remaining human race to take them over, the new host of Mel’s body is now obsessed with finding them for an entirely different reason, love.
  10. The Beach House. Another best seller for James Patterson, The Beach House is set in the East Hampton’s among the wealthiest of the wealthy. This book is about a law school student’s quest to prove that his brother’s death was no accident.

While some of these movies may be difficult to film with their complex story lines or vivid images, I am positive that they would all make box office hits.
